Job placement –
Michelle mckinlAyLearn about our job placement program, Creating Career Connections: read Michelle’s testimony
” My name is Michelle McKinlay and the JVS SoCal’s Creating Career Connections program helped me put back the pieces of my life together.
I’m a single mom with three children. I’m a survivor of domestic abuse. Before I found JVS SoCal, I was in a horrendous state. I was experiencing trauma and, when I left my husband, I had no qualifications and no support.
My caseworker went above and beyond, helping me with training, a grant, a refurbished laptop, resume, writing skills, and building myself confidence. I’m now in a stable situation and have shown my children that no matter what, you can survive.
Thank you, Women’s Leadership Network and JVS SoCal for your support. Please continue to do what you do. You have helped me and my children incredibly. I couldn’t have done it without you and I’m so very, very grateful.
Thank you. “

Job Readiness –
Nina KrachunHow Ukrainian refugee Nina Krachun turned to JVS SoCal’s job readiness services to establish her life in Southern California
” Hi, my name is Nina Krachun and I’m a certified Nurse Assistant and HealthWorks graduate. I was geologist in Ukraine but was forced to flee my country with two children when the war started.
My husband was not able to live with us, so, barely speaking English, I worked as a cleaner trying to raise my children and make enough money to survive.
Finding JVS SoCal was my first step to success. [It gave me] the opportunity to study for free, improve myself and become a nurse assistant.
Just in the three months, JVS SoCal helped me with interviews and to find work. I have reached my dream to become a nurse and help people.
Now I’ve reunited with my husband here, my kids have adjusted and are doing great at school. So, you know women need support, and [the] Women Leadership Network and JVS SoCal helped me a lot.
Thank you. “

Twenty-five-year-old Nelson Gomez was working as a caretaker through an in-home supportive services agency. He liked working with people, but he wanted to advance his career by continuing to focus on healthcare.
In his search for training opportunities, he learned about ImagingWorks, JVS SoCal’s newest career training program in partnership with RadNet. The program would train him to become a licensed DEXA Technician, a Patient Services Representative (PSR) and an MRI Tech Aide.
“I was like: ‘this is right up my alley!'” said Nelson. He knew he could not let this opportunity pass, especially after learning that he would get paid during the duration of his training and that he might eventually be hired.
The course offers hands-on experience at one of RadNet’s offices across Southern California. “What I love the most… is having preceptors around to help us with anything and any questions we have,” Nelson says that it makes a big difference when he can go from the lab prepared with questions that arise during his time using highly specialized equipment.
Nelson thanks JVS SoCal’ for this innovative program and is looking forward to having JVS SoCal on his side as he continues to advance his career in medical imaging.

CASE MANAGEMENT –
MICHAEL EKE
Case management helps Marine Corps Veteran with a job and a home

Michael Eke served in the United States Marine Corps for 10 years. Transitioning into civilian life was difficult. He found himself struggling to get to work and without a place to call home.
“Everything felt like it hit me all at once,” remembers Michael. “My challenge was accepting help.”
Michael turned to one of JVS SoCal’s Veterans Services offices looking for help. There, a case manager enrolled him in programs including the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) to help find stable housing and meaningful employment.
“We start by helping them to understand what are their interests, what are their skills and putting them together”, explains Kim Fedrick, JVS SoCal’s Chief Programs Officer.
Through HVRP program, Michael was able to get housing for him and his daughter and was also referred for recruitments and training services. Eventually, he was hired thanks to the efforts of Rashonda Weatherby, Veterans career coach.
“Rashonda is a lifesaver! She helped me get to where I am now, took care for me, and called me every day,” shared Michael.
EMPLOYER PARTNERS
FIRST CITIZENS BANK
First Citizens Bank and JVS SoCal changed this single mother’s life

Veronica David’s job as a retail worker did not meet her needs. Odd working hours, seasonal and night shifts were taking a toll on her life and her stability with her three children. Thankfully, a partnership between First Citizens Bank and JVS SoCal changed this single mother’s life.
“Customers are not always easy, but we always do our job with a smile,” says Veronica whose role at a discount department store made her question her situation at that time. One night, after working a late shift, Veronica came upon an ad about BankWork$, JVS SoCal’s no-cost eight-week program that trains students to enter the financial services industry.
In addition to quality training, the program opens doors by offering people like Veronica the opportunity to interact with banking associates and hiring managers through volunteer events and hiring fairs.
First Citizens Bank is an institution that has participated in these events for over a decade and has played a crucial role in advancing opportunities for job seekers from all walks of life.
In addition, the First Citizens Bank resource group ‘Together Women SoCal Champions’ bring members from across the nation to participate in a Zoom event where banking professionals help JVSWorks program participants practice their elevator speech and interview responses. First Citizens Bank has also been a generous sponsor year after year, a true testament to their commitment to corporate social responsibility.
This invaluable partnership supports JVS SoCal’s career development initiatives, workforce training, and mentorship programs that help individuals in our communities overcome barriers to employment.
“I definitely took the steps to be able to do something with my career and be somebody better,” says Veronica who was able to access supportive services like funds for transportation and professional attire during her training.
After completing the program Veronica interviewed and was hired by Rolando Vera, a financial sales manager with FCB at the branch in Lomita, California.
“I think the JVS SoCal program was a fantastic building block that helped her understand some of the basics needed to get into a teller transaction line position.” says Rolando
“I love being a part of First Citizens Bank, and I love the fact that they’re family oriented” says Veronica, adding that the organization encourages you to address your own financial health and seek opportunities to grow.
After seven months on the job, she was promoted to senior service representative, opening a path to more progress in the future.

On May 30, 2024, JVS SoCal celebrated its 25th Annual Strictly Business Awards Dinner at the Skirball Cultural Center. The event honored individuals and corporations for their social responsibility and philanthropy, raising funds for JVS SoCal’s mission of empowering individuals through sustainable employment. Edison International received the Corporate Partnership Award for its 13-year support of workforce development programs.
SPECIALIZED SERVICES
MARTHA ANIMAS
When Martha lost her job during the COVID-19 pandemic, she faced the difficulties that led her on a path of substance dependency and encounters with the court system. After losing custody of her three children, the South Los Angeles mother decided to start rehabilitation and JVS SoCal was there to help her along the way.
“I wanted to be stable and get a job, get an income, and have a better perspective of me, because I wasn’t the person that I was two years ago,” remembers Martha. “I had lost a lot of myself and my self-esteem, I fell into depression.”
Thanks to the help she received the America’s Job Centers of California (AJCC) in West Los Angeles, Martha is now working and getting closer to regaining custody of her children.
“I started using substances because of me being on the street,” explains Martha, “It really hit me hard… I was using substances.”
Concerned faculty at her children’s school reported her to the authorities, who followed her after a school drop-off and presented drug charges against her. As a result, Martha’s mother became the minors’ primary caretaker.
During her time in rehabilitation Martha began frequenting the AJCC, there, JVS SoCal case managers assessed her background and began steering her towards employers open to work with justice impacted job seekers.
Martha received help in completing applications for various roles, including some for temporary work in facility maintenance and as security for large events. When she was called back for interviews, her case manager coached her during the interview and throughout the background screening process.
“Work in security made me the person that I’m now because it’s a different environment,” explains Martha, who did not think she would be able to work such jobs given her prior record. She made sure she was a part of the team at every game, concert, and event she was called into by the staffing agency.
Eventually, when a recruiter at the University of California, Los Angeles, took interest in collaborating with JVS SoCal to hire highly motivated workers, a JVS SoCal team member who was assisting Martha at the time, saw an opportunity for her and others like her.
“Before I knew it, we were putting together a list of re-entry candidates” said the team member whose primary role was connecting companies with qualified candidates.
Martha’s case manager and her team worked together to give her the best change of securing a job at the University. Through specialized services, Martha accessed funds for professional clothing and auto repairs to ensure she had reliable transportation. After a series of interviews, Martha landed the job.
Now, working at the UCLA campus in Westwood, Martha enjoys working in the University’s cafeteria, where she meets students and helps them with choosing their meals. Those interactions bring job and positivity to her life. Most importantly, this new experience is helping her make progress in regaining her parental rights.

SCHOLARSHIPS
IVIE FAMILY
A FAMILY MOVING AHEAD: COLE, ELLA, AND LIVIA IVIE HAVE BEEN TRULY BLESSED BY THE JVS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Marc Ivie, Livia Ivie, Kelli Ivie, Ella Ivie, Cole Ivie
These amazing siblings faced the financial challenge of entering college a couple years apart from each other. The COVID-19 pandemic made this burden even more taxing on their parents, both of whom are self-employed, as it depleted their income.
At the same time, Ella was diagnosed with an aneurysmal tumor that affected 75% of her right tibia bone. Although still under treatment today, Ella, 21, is a Louisiana State University undergraduate majoring in fashion design and business.
With the help of the JVS Scholarship Program, all three siblings now attend college. Cole, 23, a multi-year JVS scholarship recipient, is working on his master’s degree in wildlife conservation at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Livia, 18, attends Vassar College majoring in psychology.
Cole, funded by the Roslyn and Abner D. Goldstine Scholarship Fund and the Carol and Jerry Muchin Family Scholarship, hopes to pursue a PhD and enter academia. “The relief of financial support gives me the time to focus on what I need to and put more emphasis on my academics and the extracurriculars that are super important for my growth,” says Cole.
Ella, who must travel periodically to Los Angeles for her medical treatments, hopes to one day own a sustainable clothing line and push the fashion industry to be more environmentally friendly.
“I’ve gotten to study abroad and do research which has been incredible and opened a lot of doors,” said Ella of her experience. “I’m in fashion design and I plan to acquire work experience first and then grow from there,” Ella received the Pearle Rae Levey Scholarship in Everlasting Remembrance of Mark B. Levey.
Livia, whose scholarship is sponsored by the JVS Women’s Leadership Network, is also a student athlete. The scholarship has given her hope that she can achieve her goals despite the obstacles her family faced. “I’m super excited to have this opportunity that JVS SoCal has given me to be able to go to school and also play soccer,” says Livia.
Marc and Kelli Ivie, the proud parents of these three outstanding students say, “it’s been very fortunate that JVS SoCal has provided us with support the last five years, and it’s made things a lot easier for us. Relieving that burden has been very, very helpful. We can’t say enough about the support we’ve had from JVS SoCal.”
The Ivie family is most grateful for the investment JVS SoCal has made in their education and their future.

In 2024, JVS SoCal awarded scholarships totaling $914,000 to over 200 Jewish students. The award ceremony took place at Sinai-Temple on July 25. Committee Co-Chair Jonathan A. Karp attributed the program’s success to dedicated volunteers. Addee Lerner, a scholarship recipient and keynote speaker, expressed gratitude for the support in her medical studies at UCLA.
